INCIDENTS IN THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE SAGINAW VALLEY

BY JUDGE ALBERT MILLER

Our object is to leave them on the wall of the court as a record of the men who have been honored enough by the people where they lived to fill one of the most, if not the most, responsible positions in their gift. We wish the wall of our court to show the men who, under the "Shield of the Goddess of Liberty, " have protected the fortunes and homes of the widow and the fatherless during all these fifty years, and we can only hope that those who shall follow may leave theirs also, so that in the far off future they may be and become a part of the county with its history as much as though they were still with us. Ozias W. Seymour, Register of Probate.
Yesterday the following letter came in reply. It is full of interesting points, characteristic and pithy. Bay City, May 24f, 1886. Ozias W. Seymour, Esq., Register of Probate, Saginaw County Dear Sir—Yours of the 21st inst., containing the interesting relic (the pin with which I fastened together the first papers issued in the probate court of Saginaw county) came duly to hand, for which receive my thanks.
I remember the circumstances of issuing those papers. Peter Riley, in his lifetime, owned the section of land upon which Carrollton now stands. It was claimed he was indebted to parties in Detroit at the time of his death. Hon. Gardner D. Williams purchased some of those claims and took out letters of administration, but, I believe, no inventory was ever returned, the father of Riley paying all the debts and assuming control of the property which he sold to Hon. Charles H. Carroll.
