INCIDENTS IN THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE SAGINAW VALLEY

BY JUDGE ALBERT MILLER

I have talked with two other old Indians on the same subject, and their tradition is precisely the same, word for word, with one exception. They say the battles on the Flint were fought by the army coming from Detroit. I have have no doubt the above is a correct narrative, as much so as if it had been written at the time, and handed down to us as a matter of history.
SOME CORRESPONDENCE OP INTEREST
In collecting the pictures of the probate judges of Saginaw county, to be hung upon the walls of the probate court office, Register Seymour wrote Hon. Albert Miller of Bay City the following letter: Saginaw, Mich., May 21, 1886. Hon. Albert Miller, Bay City, Michigan: Dear Sir—Enclosed I hand you the pin with which you fastened the first file together in the probate court for Saginaw county, in the matter of the estate of Peter Riley, deceased, in which letters were issued January 11, 1836, to G. D. Williams by you, as the first judge of probate for the county, a little more than fifty years ago.
I thought perhaps this pin would be worth enough to you ("not for its intrinsic value alone" but for the associations clustering around it and its fifty years of age) so that you could afford to send me an appropriate picture of yourself to hang in the office of the probate court. I have a fine one of Eleazer Jewett, second judge of probate for the county, furnished by O. F. Jewett, also one of Otto Roeser, fourth judge, furnished by the family, and have the promise of one of Luke Wellington, third judge, from his son Fred., which, with yours, will make a complete list of them up to the present one, Lawson C. Holden. If you can give us yours please write under portrait your name, date you took office and length of time you served.
