INCIDENTS IN THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE SAGINAW VALLEY

BY JUDGE ALBERT MILLER

GOING SEVENTY-FIVE MILES TO MILL WITH OX TEAMS
At the time about which I am writing, the farmers of Saginaw and vicinity; were raising good crops; they had got tired of using the hand mill for grind ing their corn, and thought they could not afford to purchase all their bread stuff from the supplies shipped in from Detroit by the Messrs. Williams.
Four of them, Artemas W. Bacon, Humphrey McLean, Governor Vinton, and the writer, agreed to join in company and each take a grist to be ground at Pontiac, where the nearest grist mill was located. This was in January, 1834, when all our team horses had horns in other words, we had none but ox teams. Previous to this, Charles McLean had purchased a lot of land at Pine Run, and built a log house in which he kept the first tavern, or stopping place, between Flint and Saginaw. Mr. McLean joined us with his team and took a load of household goods to his new home at Pine Run. The teams from Tittabawassee passed my house at Green Point before I was ready to start: I told them I would overtake them at their first night's camping ground; I followed after them and at dark found them crouched in the snow, shivering over a small fire built by the side of a log, without any preparations having been made for sleeping or for comfort during waking hours. After I had taken care of my team, I got some shovels from McLean's load, had the snow cleared away, chopped some wood and got a rousing fire burning, cut brush and laid on the ground before it, upon which we laid our bags of grain, placed our blankets on them, and made a bed upon which we slept comfortably all night.
