INCIDENTS IN THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE SAGINAW VALLEY

BY JUDGE ALBERT MILLER

I met Mr. Clark afterwards, accompanied by his daughter, to whom he introduced me as his runaway justice, a, designation which he ever after applied to me. The Governor Marcy continued to make regular trips to Saginaw during the remainder of the season, and during the season of 1837 and a part of 1838, and the writer made many trips on her while she was in the Saginaw trade. She was a logy old tub compared with steamboats of the present day. Her first commander, Captain Gorham, was a complete dandy; hi would perch himself on the wheelhouse, dressed in some fantastic style am motion with his arms as if piloting the boat; but Captain Rhodes, who was an old navigator of the river and knew every foot of the ground, would pa; no more attention to him than if he was not there; I have known him change his dress three or four times after entering the river before reaching the land ing at Saginaw. He was superseded in his command before the first season closed.
The boat could barely overcome the rapid current at the head of the Si Clair river. There was a stump on the Canada shore opposite the stronges current, and the passengers were accustomed to watch the exciting race be tween the boat and stump. The boat would push boldly forward and fairly get ahead of the stump, when, through a slight deviation from a direct line the current would cause her to fall back, and the stump would be ahead, but by repeated trials and perseverance the boat always won the race. There were no tugs for towing vessels in those waters at that time, and sail vessel had to wait at the foot of the rapids for a favorable wind.
