INCIDENTS IN THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE SAGINAW VALLEY

BY JUDGE ALBERT MILLER

He did not find the Bad River canal; which was to bring such great wealth and prosperity to the Saginaw valley; that was a thing of the past, forgotten by almost every one. But other improvements had been made; instead the little hamlet called Saginaw City being almost the only settlement on the Saginaw river he found four beautiful cities and three large villages aggress ing a population of nearly one hundred thousand; and instead of one small vessel and an occasional trip of a steamboat being able to do all the carrying trade on the Saginaw valley, he found that Bay City rated as third in co mercial importance of all the cities around the chain of great lakes, and this in population of all the cities of Michigan. The pine timber that grew in such abundance on the tributaries of the Saginaw that the land upon which it stood was not considered worth purch ing at one dollar and twenty-five cents per acre, had proved such a source wealth as to bring millions of dollars into the Valley, to enrich its inhabitant and that the source of the salt springs that he had heard of in the vicinity Saginaw had been found by drilling a thousand feet. into the earth and be raised to the surface, from which over two million barrels of salt were mined annually, and that the lands in the Valley, a great portion of which had been considered unfit for cultivation, had become the most productive of any the State.
THE NORTHERN RAILROAD
One of the improvements projected by the commissioners of internal improv ments in 1837 was the Northern railroad, passing on a line from Port Huron to Grand Haven.
