PORT HURON, MICHIGAN

BY MRS. B. C. FARRAND

Mrs. Davis, then a very little girl, Anna Hamilton, had no playthings but a doll given her by Major Thorn, and so she pined to see the little Indians and French girls. Her mother one day, said to her, "Anna, you'll: grow up to be Indian or French, I don't know which.
On the north side of the river was the Doran house, built of logs by Louis Facer, on Quay street, not far from the present Military street bridge. Mr. Brutch had a store and dwelling house near the site of the present First ^National bank. Major Thorn and a Mr. Cook had a store on the point to trade with the Indians. Major Thorn afterwards platted what is now known as Thorn's plat. A boat or canoe furnished the means for crossing the river, while the cattle and horses swam over. Here for many years Esquire Hamilton served as justice of the peace, and performed the ceremony for all marriages in the country round, except the Romanists. Such were duly solemnized by Fathers Richard or Badin, of Detroit. Old Mrs. Petit was a devout Catholic, and was seldom without a prayer book in her hand. She took snuff and usually wore a kerchief on her head, at other times a cap, which seemed always new; her house had one living room, two bed rooms and an attic. The only Protestant meetings were held in the company's quarters at the fort, and a Sunday school was held in the parlor of Mrs. Major Thomson. The piano is remembered but not the singing. On the days of preaching service the piano was taken over to the. company quarters.
Day school was held in the sentry-box and was taught by one of the soldiers better educated than the others, and the children of the officers attended.
