PORT HURON, MICHIGAN

BY MRS. B. C. FARRAND

In a former paper prepared for the Wavne County Pioneer Society and now published in the State Pioneer collections. I endeavored to give an account of the beginnings of Port Huron, its early French inhabitants and traders; also to give the location of the first fort* in lower Michigan and its building by Du Luth in the latter part of the seventeenth century, and introduced various matters pertaining to this region in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The adventures of those early voyagers, and explorers, whose names, Le Caron, Du Luth, Recolet, La Salle, Marquette and the like, are familiar, have furnished prolific themes of romance as well as history, so that to write of early days connected with names less familiar may suggest presumption on the part of the writer, and ideas of romance will vanish at their mention.
The early days of Desmond do not refer to the dim and shadowy past, but to a time even now fresh in the memory of a few still living, who were participants in the adventures rehearsed and scenes described, and to events recorded on pages still bright and easily read, in the not ponderous volumes of the first records of St. Clair county, although to the average citizen of that county the name Desmond will suggest nothing of which they have ever heard, and for aught they know, may antedate the coming of La Salle. Your honored first president, the Hon. Levi Bishop, rehearsed in rhyme and measure, in the "Teuchsagrondie Grondie, " the happy life that surrounded the deep waters of the Otsisippi (the River St. Clair), and the lakes of equally euphonious name, the noble Caniatare (Lake Huron), and Ot-si-ke-ta (Lake St. Clair). Charmed by the melody of those Indian names, he delved among dusty shelves and manuscripts, and lovingly lingered among yellow records and old books, or chatted with the garrulous, aged pioneer, hoping to find some little treasure for this society.
