Misc Stories

BY EPHRAIM S. WILLIAMS

Barker & Ripely, John Quigley, A. L. Stewart and John Delbridge cared for the shoeless, while Skidmore crowned the head and Uncle Dave Mather the hands. True, and Beecher and Lounsburj^ supplied the necessary articles of jewelry and kept old Time's implements in order, while Stevenson added to these useful employments the pleasant duty of supplying the mental food for old and young to be found in books. Holmes, Charles, Miller and Sullivan supplied the houses with furniture, while George Hill furnished in addition the last narrow tenement the citizen required and Johnson placed at the head the marble slab which told their virtues. Gazley, Pursell, Knickerbocker and Vassault harnessed the horses and Pruman and Wicks shod them. E. H. Hazelton and A. W. Brockway discounted the western money for you, and Fenton, Newton, Davis, Thomson Howard, Carr, Chauncey Wisner, O. Adams, C. K. Williams, George K. Cummings et al. read the law for a consideration; Charles Hascall dispensed justice and Charley Griswold and Jake Farley served the papers. Very many incidents of those days, though not very remote to many of the older citizens remaining, come to one's mind, of which space forbids the mention; and one recalls the familiar faces of many then daily seen on the streets who have forever passed from our view (and whose absence which twenty years may effect) each with his peculiar characteristics, and with whose name is associated some reminiscence of early days of the little city; the dignified Fenton and the courteous Avery, the brusque Benj. Pier-son, the facetious George Cumings, the genial Roosevelt, the shrewd Gregory, the Hendersons, the Walkers, C. S. Payne, Witherbee, Orapo, Robert Page, E. W. Jenny and George Crocker.
