MICHIGAN TERRITORY IN 1820

The margins of many of the lakes and streams are in a similar situation, and in many places are literally afloat. On approaching the eastern part of the military lands towards the private claims on the strait and lake the country does not contain so many swamps and lakes, but the extreme sterility and barrenness of the soil continues the same—taking the country altogether so far as has been explored and to all appearances together with the information received concerning the balance, is as bad—there would not be more than one acre out of a hundred, if there would be one out of a thousand that would in any case admit of cultivation.

The above is an accurate copy, including peculiarities of orthography, punctuation, grammer, etc. Imagine the shade of our former surveyor general visiting again the scenes-of his early life at Chillicothe, at Tiffin, Ohio, and then making a rapid journey across the territory of Michigan in any direction. Possibly, however, lie was misled by willful misrepresentation on the part of his surveyors. An example of. that kind can be cited in relation to the alleged "survey" of some of our northern counties. Take, for example, Gladwin county: there, is probably nowhere in the west a county that is so inaccurately surveyed as it is; indeed, it is generally believed that the party of surveyors who were to lay out that county, and upon whose skill generations of people must depend for accurate descriptions of their farms and homes, got on a big drunk of ten days' duration at the old "Webster House, " in Saginaw City, and actually in order to make up time "surveyed"' Gladwin county in one of the bed rooms of that erstwhile famous hostelry.
