A SKETCH OF LUCIUS LYON

by GEORGE H. WHITE

The fact shows better the character of the man than any other mere description of him can. I would like to detail these visits, especially the one of 1828, but, though interesting, they do not afford any aid towards a sketch of him and his connection with the affairs of this territory, so I must pass them. A strong friendship had grown up between Mr. Lyon, Gov. Cass and Henry K. Schoolcraft; each had the best interest of the territory at heart and each in his way was working towards that end.
It does not seem desirable to delay this narrative by stating the points in the states of Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan, or the times when he was there, running the exterior lines of townships or subdividing townships into sections and parts of sections, although this is easily done, for it would only interest the respective localities.
Michigan's former delegates in congress had but a very superficial knowledge of its resources and facilities; travel around it was slow and expensive and certainly it was not to be sought for pleasure, as the hardships attending it were very great; whether it was performed in canoe, on horseback or afoot, it was alike attended by fatigue and privation if long continued. Outside of Gov. Cass, Mr. Schoolcraft, and the several judges, very few made journeys of any considerable distance, save those engaged in the fur trade. It is therefore not singular that those who had been chosen delegates should not possess that knowledge which could not be obtained in any other way. The exertions of Gov. Cass, Mr. Lyon and others had succeeded in attracting some attention to Michigan territory as desirable for those seeking cheap lands to locate on and make for themselves homes.
