A SKETCH OF LUCIUS LYON

by GEORGE H. WHITE

Whitehall, thence by stage to Albany and from there by stage to Buffalo. He obtained passage on a sailing vessel from Buffalo to Detroit without inquiring the fare, but after setting sail he learned the amount necessary, and found' that, all told, his funds were $2. 50 short of paying his way. This, as he afterwards said, was the cause of more anxiety to his mind than any other single act of his life, for there was not a person aboard whom he had ever seen or heard of before. But a short time before his departure from home he had become a member of the Masonic fraternity. After much consideration it flashed upon his mind, that if there was a Mason among the passengers, the fact that he was also one, might be to him a sufficient voucher to cause him to lend him the needed sum until their arrival in Detroit where, he felt assured, he could obtain it of Mr. Farmer. He found a member of the fraternity aboard, whose whole money possessions were five dollars, but which were divided with him. He paid his fare and was easy; he repaid it at Detroit; obtained a memorandum of the name and address, which he lost and could never recall it. He made many ineffectual efforts to find the person who befriended him and in after life he often expressed great regrets at his inability to do so. One of the prominent traits of Mr. Lyon's character was fidelity to his friends and warmth of gratitude for favors.
On his arrival at Detroit he entered upon the duties of a teacher in the seminary of which Mr. Farmer was principal. He presented his letters to Gov. Cass and others, and his personal appearance, manners and intelligence were such as to cause a warm welcome into Detroit and Monroe society.
