A SKETCH OF LUCIUS LYON

by GEORGE H. WHITE

Until he was about eighteen years old he worked hard on the farm in the summer months, and attended school in the winter. His father found him a very considerate, thoughtful lad during those days, always seeking by mechanical devices and machinery to save labor on the farm; in the devising and fabricating of which, he was particularly handy. He was large and strong for his age, and had the appearance of being several years older than he was. He was diligent in his school studies, and a very attentive reader, seeking and rarely failing to obtain a thorough mastery of the subject he was studying or reading. His memory was retentive and tolerably quick and active. At the age of eighteen he commenced attending the academy at Shelbourne Falls, and afterwards at Burlington, and obtained as good an education as those institutions afforded. His father and himself upon consultation over the matter thought it beyond the power of his father to support his large family and spare the means to enable him to enter the university of Vermont, which was located at Burlington. During portions of the time he taught a district sehool to the satisfaction of both pupils and parents, and received repeated invitations to teach the same and other schools. His mind from early boyhood onward was very practical. He especially showed that trait of it in the selection and pursuit of his studies; he sought and obtained instruction in land surveying and practical engineering from John Johnson of Burlington, a well known civil engineer and a very prominent citizen, because it could make him money returns. He remained in his office until he had obtained a thorough knowledge of civil engineering and especially of land surveying. When he was twenty-two years old his attention was turned towards the great west as the field of his future labors.
