A SKETCH OF LUCIUS LYON

by GEORGE H. WHITE

That Mr. Lyon should be regarded as among the leading spirits, is the highest possible indorsement of his ability, when the convention included such men as William Woodbridge, John Biddle, Robert McClelland, Boss Wilkins, Edward Mundy, Randolph Manning, Isaac E. Crary, Hezekiah G. Wells and John S. Barry.
At the meeting of the first State legislature he and John S. Norvell were elected United States senators, Norvell for the long term and he the short one. His friends believing that there would be no political change within the next following three years were pleased to have it thus, as certainly making him his own successor. But when the time came for choosing his successor there had been a complete overturn in politics, owing to the financial policy of the Mason administration, and he did not succeed himself.
During his service as senator no particularly exciting questions were under discussion in the Senate, and Mr. Lyon, although an industrious, hard-working, pains-taking senator, had no chance to secure for himself a national reputation. Whatever matters concerned the interest of the northwest, and especially of Michigan, that came up he gave thorough attention to, and by his superior knowledge carried his points concerning them and caused no dissatisfaction at home. During this time he was unwearied in sounding the praises of Michigan and her almost unrivaled resources. The amount of good that he did in that way was very great and largely aided in securing an emigration from the best New England and New York stocks, and its influence has been constantly felt in our laws, our schools and churches, our habits and customs.
After the termination of his senatorial career he made a voyage across the ocean to the old world, which was no light matter in those days.
