A HISTORY OF THE ASYLUMS FOR THE INSANE IN MICHIGAN

BY HENRY M. HURD, M. D.

As a result of this concerted effort among philanthropic men throughout the State, the bill for an additional asylum, to be known as the Northern Michigan Asylum, was passed in Slay, 1881. The act appropriated 1400, 000, and directed that the building be located within six months. A locating board, consisting of Dr. E. H. Van Deusen, of Kalamazoo, Perry Hannah, of Traverse City, and M. H. Butler, of Mt. Clemens, was immediately appointed. As a result of the energetic efforts of these commissioners the asylum was located the following November, at Traverse City, upon Grand Traverse bay. The ground plans for this building, also, were furnished by Dr. E. H. Van Deusen, and. the elevation and working plans were supplied by G. W. Lloyd, of Detroit. A board of building commissioners, consisting of Dr. E. H. Van Deusen, Perry Hannah, M. H. Butler, H. H. Riley. and Alexander Chapoton, was appointed by (lie Governor to superintend the erection of the building. C. M. Wells, the superintendent of construction at Pontiac, was appointed the superintendent of construction of the building. The work of the institution was pushed so rapidly that in ^November, 1885, it was ready for the reception of patients, of which 45 were transferred from the Eastern Michigan Asylum, at Pontiac, and about 250 from the Michigan Asylum at Kalamazoo. The cost of the asylum complete has been $522,430.68.
These two last mentioned asylums have been essentially offshoots from the original asylum at Kalamazoo, and all in their methods and modes of treatment have been in substantial and harmonious agreement. By law it has been customary to hold conferences of the board of trustees and medical superintendents of the three institutions at some one of the asylums twice each year, and the result of such conferences has been most happy.
